January 25th marks the Chinese New Year and gives the start of the Year of the Rat. We at BroadwayPass are huge admirers of Chinese culture, especially Chinese cuisine. That is why we’ve picked up several Chinese restaurants that we enjoy visiting.
What our friends and staff say:
Tasty food at a great communicative place! I always have the House Special Hot Chicken.
The Mapo Tofu is one of the finest vegetarian dishes on the block.
Superb Dim Sum. Steamed Crystal Shrimp, Steamed Pork, and especially House Special Dan Dan!
China Xiang is situated just a few blocks from most of the major theatres. Placed on 42nd Street and 9th Avenue, it takes just around 10 minutes walking to Lunt-Fontanne (the furthest of them all). Yet, the Minskoff, Richard Rogers, The Majestic, Broadhurst and the rest are closer, so if you want to see “Lion King”, “Hamilton”, “Phantom of the Opera”, “Jagged Little Pill”, and honor the Chinese New Year, then this is a perfect place.
China Xiang offers amazing traditional Chinese food. They serve a large variety of dishes suited for every taste and diet. There is a cool feature on their website – small graphic tags that mark the dishes as a vegetarian (a leaf), and chili pepper (for hot). They have lots of offers in appetizers, chicken, pork, beef, seafood, soups and a lot more (their menu is just HUGE). The Dim Sum is pretty good, with the Steamed pork dumplings, the Scallion Pancake, Wonton in Chili Oil, and Steamed Crystal Shrimp Dumplings are a standout. The Hunan Special Smoked Pork is rich in taste. But there’s only one dish that’s not marked as hot, so if you’re not a fan, then you should go for the Sauteed Hunan Smoked Pork with Green Leek. The Hunan Rice Noodle has a great vegetarian offer with the Sour String Beans Hunan Noodle Soup, and meat dish – Braised Beef Flank Hunan Noodle Soup.
The Signature dishes are truly amazing. There are some untraditional offers like Steamed Fish Head with Chopped Chili, and Pork Intestine in Chili Pepper. Or Sauteed Frogs with Green Chili. Yet, they are superb, so you should definitely try them. You’ll really enjoy them, and it will make a great story. If you love your poultry, then you’ll be fascinated with the Sauteed Farm Chicken with Spring Ginger or the House Special Hot Chicken. The pork is not to be skipped, too. The Sauteed Sour String Beans with Minced Pork, and Stir Fried Farm House Pork with Crispy Rice Cake are just a part of the mix. The vegetarians will truly enjoy the Roasted Green Chili with Eggplant, and Hot and Spicy Trotters. If you’re not into hot or spicy stuff then you can pick the Tea Smoke Duck, Braised Pork Belly, or the Steamed Okra with Garlic Sauce.
So, if you want to celebrate the Chinese New Year in style, then China Xiang is your place to go. May the Year of the Rat bring you good luck and good fortune. Happy Chinese New Year 2020!
