Dear Evan Hansen

Dear Evan Hansen is a musical, based on the book by Steven Levenson, following the life of Evan, who “invents a role for himself in a tragedy he didn’t earn.”

The premiere of the show was in 2015 in Arena Stage, Washington, coming in on Broadway in 2016 at Music Box Theatre.

What is the musical about?

The musical follows the story of Evan Hansen, who is a bullied teenager. Feeling like an outcast, he’s overtaken by anxiety and desire to connect and to find a circle to belong in. His therapist insists on Evan writing letters to himself, detailing what would be good about each day and moment in life. Everything takes a different turn once this letter falls into the hands of a couple, who’s mourning the loss of their child.

Where is the musical played?

The musical was first played in Washington, followed by an off-Broadway production. In 2016, the show premiered on Broadway. The immense interest and liking lead to a National Tour, launching in Denver. The show also had a sit-down production in Toronto and a West End production in London in 2019.

What does the audience say about the musical?

Ben Platt’s original performance was talk of the town during the opening of the musical. The role was not only stellar, but also opened up a dialogue on very important topics such as mental health and youth suicide.

The set has been praised to have been made in such a way, transforming a stage into an intimate living room where the most raw and vulnerable of the emotional world is shared between a mother and a son.

The music has also been a key element, making the whole play an exceptional piece. The melody and the lyrics are praised to have the effect of changing the mood from somber to happy to critical and to light again, as an emotional rollercoaster.

The critiques say that the show might romanticise heavy topics such a mental issues and suicide, yet majority of the audience finds it positive to shine light onto such subjects.
