Immersive Shows in NYC

Contrary to the traditional ‘ sit and watch’ Broadway shows, the immersive concept of plays that has taken over NYC by storm has you participate and play a key role in a script’s development. Such Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway productions tend to break the barrier between actors and audience and go in on a unique, unpredictable path. The immersive shows have been slow to return to the city due to the pandemic regulations, but are finally making their way through. Here are some of the best ones you can see.

Sleep No More

The king of immersive shows, staged in the beautiful yet eery McKittrick Hotel. An experience having you go through more than 90 different spaces, depending on your own role, following a Stanley Kubrick-like take on the Scottish classic Macbeth.

Chasing Andy Warhol

More of a theatrical walking tour, Chasing Andy Warhol is transporting audiences smack-dab into the middle of the 20th century, when Warhol’s influence on the art world fully took shape. Starting at Astor place, the tour continues through Bowery and ends at Von Bar. Rolling through some of the most well-known spots in the East Village, the audience is surprised by actors performing from the streets, in alleys and in secret locations.

Drunk Shakespeare

The premise behind the play is that one of the 5 actors downs between 4-6 shots of whiskey, before the performance. The drunk actor then sets a tone to the start of the play and the other actors are to follow and comply with his ideas and direction. The show always turns out different and experimental. The show follows a trend of drinking and playing, popularised by the Comedy Central Series called Drunk History.

A person from the audience could be the King or the Queen, having a say of how the story unravels.
