Sarah Jessica Parker and her Broadway Journey

Everybody knows Sarah Jessica Parker-her style and her iconic character Carrie Bradshow from Sex and the City. Many grew up with her and aspired to be as fashionable as her or at least own one single pair of Manolo Blanhik. The actress keeps on moving and shaking, now making her return to Broadway with her husband Matthew Broderick in Neil Simon’s play Plaza Suite.

That marks a ‘return’ and not a debut, as SJP has been on Broadway multiple times. We take a look at the roles she has embodied during the years.

The Innocents

SJP was as young as 11 years old when she made her Broadway debut starring as the 8-year-old Flora. The show was based on Henry James’ horror novella “The Turn of the Screw” and ran only 12 performances. Sarah’s role Flora was a girl who was possessed by spirits.

Between 1978 and 1980, Sarah played Annie. This iconic role was a huge milestone for the actress as at the age of 15 she had already scored two Broadway plays with the later on being one of the most popular and loved musicals and characters of all time.

To Gillian on her 37th Birthday

Sarah’s Off-Broadway debut was with “To Gillian on her 37th Birthday.” Another ghostly story following the life of a father who is suffering from losing his wife and is neglecting his daughter (Sarah).

The Heidi Chronicles

A better known Off-Broadway role for Sarah, the actress plays three characters: Becky, Clara, and Denise. The show shortly transferred to Broadway, but Sarah had left at this point. Funny enough, the role was taken over by Sarah’s Sex and the City colleague Cynthia Nixon.

The Substance of Fire

Parker technically performed in The Substance of Fire twice: during its Playwrights Horizons premiere and when the play transferred to the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center Theater. Sarah starred as Sarah Geldhard, a wife to Holocaust survivor Isaac Geldhart, who becomes a book publisher after returning to ‘normal’ life.

A play about a dog Sylvia, that gets adopted by a couple, and following their lives unfold. The play later also transferred to Broadway. Sarah had left at this point, but her now husband Matthew Broderick took on a Broadway role.

How to Succeed in Business without really trying

The first show in which Sarah starred together with her husband Matthew. Sarah acted as replacement to Rosemary Pilkington- a secretary and future wife of  Broderick’s J. Pierrepont Finch. When Sarah took on the role, Matthew had already left, but funnily enough returned just so he could star with his half.

Once upon a Mattress

The play marks Sarah’s first leading role after Annie. She played Princess Winnifred at this musical adaptation of The Princess and the Pea. The bold and brash Winnifred is the total opposite of the chic, sophisticated Carrie Bradshaw she’d become known for a year later. Then again, between Winnifred and Carrie (not to mention all her other roles), Parker has cemented herself as real-life stage and screen royalty.

Plaza Suite

Sarah is now making her Broadway return, starring in Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite, together with her husband Matthew. The Neil Simon classic features 3 couples, 6 personas in total, going through love, marriage, life and work, starring as all 3 families. The power cast is also completed with Danny Bolero as The Waiter, Drama Desk Award nominee Molly Ranson as Jean McCormick/Mimsey Hubley, and Eric Wiegand as The Bellhop/Borden Eisler.
