January 25th marks the Chinese New Year and gives the start of the Year of the Rat. We at BroadwayPass are huge admirers of Chinese culture, especially Chinese cuisine. That is why we’ve picked up several Chinese restaurants that we enjoy visiting.

Zest Szechuan is a standout of Chinese cuisine in their area. It is situated on a 12-15 minutes walk from Theatre District. The closest is the Stephen Sondheim and Town Hall where you can see “Mrs. Doubtfire” and Bitch Sesh. The restaurant can be easily accessed by 6th Avenue.

Zest Szechuan serves some of the finest Chinese and Szechuan traditional dishes around. They have a very long menu list, including a thing for any taste – poultry, pork, seafood, veggies, and some fine specials.

The seafood list includes a lot of hot/spicy dishes (typical for all Chinese restaurants). If you’re up for something hot, then you should try Szechuan Style Spicy Prawns. If you’re not into spicy stuff then Typhoon Fish Fillets are your pick. The spicy chicken’s finest is probably the Chong Qing Spicy Diced Chicken. The best you can go for not-hot is either Orange Chicken or Sesame Chicken. Pork is dominated by the not-hot dishes, with Shredded Pork w. Sweet Miso Sauce and Braised Ribs w. Potatoes ticking all my boxes. Prawns with Spare Rib in Dry Pot is your pick if you go for spicy. The vegetarians have a wide range of dishes to pick like Snow-Pea Shoot w. Fresh Garlic, Baby Bok Choy w. Wood Ear, or Eggplant in Spicy Garlic Sauce.

The Zest signature dishes are the “main act” of the place. Jumbo Shrimp and Squid Casserole, Jiang Bei Style Boiled Fish Fillets, Braised Pork Belly w. Chestnuts are a small part of the amazing menu. If you have a taste for the more extravagant then you can try their Bullfrog dishes.

The place is rather large, with a modern, urban design. The service is very quick and polite. You can ask them about anything and they will help you with a smile.

Zest Szechuan is a celebrated and popular place. They have received wide recognition by receiving 1st Place in NY Chinese Restaurant by “A Bite of America” in 2017 and made it to the cover of the Michelin Guide in October 2017. Also, they gave a long interview for the guide.
